On September 22, 1624, a devastating fire swept through Oslo , then known as Christiania, destroying much of the city. This catastrophic event led to the relocation of the city center from its original location near the Akershus Fortress to a new site on the eastern side of the river Aker. The fire not only reshaped the physical landscape but also marked a significant turning point in the city’s architecture and urban planning. In the aftermath, the city was rebuilt with a more organized layout, incorporating wider streets and brick buildings, which were less susceptible to flames than the wooden structures that had previously dominated the skyline.
